September 19

We will miss this remarkable woman.

First Spider Lily

Mother was born on Sept. 19, 1925
Jo Eleanor Sledge McDowell
9.19.25 - 12.16.2005
I miss her and rarely does a day go by that I don't think of her.
I wish I'd asked her more questions about when she was young
and even about when my brothers and I were young.

They stopped by Wednesday--on their way to their new home.

I'm excited for them on their new adventure,

  1. Mail will be all the more precious with your loved ones being so far away from you. Think of all the new adventures for them and you. I always love seeing your mail.

  2. I love that quote of RBG's! Had to add it to my blog sidebar.

    Wonderful mail.

    1. There are so many great RBG quotes, but this one was a gift from Penne. We've been friends since we were about 13 and share a love of RBG and books. :)

  3. Excellent quote and I'm going to add that on my blog's sidebar too to honor her. Can't wait for my letter! :) I'm so sorry your loved ones are moving away. I know that's though.

    1. The magnet is on my refrigerator, and now, it means even more. Yes, it is hard to know Erin and the kids are so far away, but I look forward to visiting them. Hope your letter arrives soon!

  4. Goodness, yes, I wish I knew what questions I would want to have answered in ten years' time, so I could ask them now!

    1. I hope the answers will come up before you even think to ask, Rachel. We moved a lot as kids as my father was transferred, so I wish I'd thought to ask about the different places we lived, clarified events that are vague, that sort of thing. Also--which version is the truth when siblings remember events differently! :)

  5. A sweet post. Always love your mail art. I am so blessed to have my 89 year old mom still. I love hearing her childhood stories. I come from diary keepers-my grandma not only kept a diary, but late in her life she wrote out a huge book of her memories and life story. I transcibed her handwritten book into type and made copies for the family. It's one of our treasures.

  6. Spider Lilies say fall to me. My mother planted many of them when we were kids. They still bloom & my brother sends me a photo every year

    1. They do say fall, don't they? They are so cheerfully red, and I love that they come back each year, spreading slowly!

  8. Wow! Colorado will be a new adventure for all of you as you and Fee must visit Colorado more frequently, hopefully during the summer.

    1. Such a time for a move! The pandemic makes traveling so awkward. Hoping for a vaccine soon!
