I don't care which party you belong to, the USPS is important to all Americans.  It is not a profit-making organization; it is a public service.  No other company or corporation is forced to set aside money for employees who haven't even been born yet.

In 2006, Congress passed a law to require the USPS to prefund 75 years worth of retiree health benefits in the span of ten years—a cost of approximately $110 billion. Although the money is intended to be set aside for future Post Office retirees, the funds are instead being diverted to help pay down the national debt.Feb 5, 202
Yes, I think the slow down by Postmaster General De Joyce is an attempt prevent people from voting--especially those of us who are over 60 and everyone who is nervous about standing in line during a pandemic.  But the USPS is responsible for so much more than voting by mail:  medications, tax refunds, business advertisements, packages, military voting, holiday cards, magazines, and (my favorite) personal mail.  The USPS actively recruits veterans and disabled veterans.

100,000 Military members
The United States Postal Service® has a long history of providing career opportunities to veterans, reservists, and their family members. In fact, we currently employ nearly 100,000 Military members and Veterans in our organization.

Outgoing Mail Today

See the faux postage right in the middle of Annie's letter?
A freebie from The Perforated Post :)

Yesterday, our AC went on the blink.  The heat index for our area was 113 degrees on my app.  Heavens to Betsy, it was hot and humid!  Inside the house, it was miserable.  Someone came out to check and was supposed to be back here at 8:30 AM.  Still not here and it is 1:30 PM.  They had to get a new motor from somewhere.  The high today is only supposed to be 94 and not as humid, but it is 85 in the house, and I am going back out back with the super cooler fan!

They didn't get here until about 4 PM; but things are much better.  Whew!

  1. I need that sewing sign!!! I do, I need it!
Hmm, I think Bryce Eleanor is older than I was thinking she is. She writes a very nice letter.
I’m not sure what is going on with the post office. But, if they are doing stuff purposely to discourage mail of any kind, they should start sewing because that is just WRONG. I have slowed down on sending mail because it is not all getting delivered. I think we will always need to have physical mail of some kind. I don’t like reading that the post office itself is purposely making the service undependable. They might find themselves with some competition one day. That might be interesting.

    1. Bryce Eleanor is twelve, and she is much older than I think she is! :) As for the postal service, I can and will vote in person if necessary, but I want the USPS funded and its importance realized for all of things other than mail in ballots. The competition is more expensive, but if the powers that be make the postal service unreliable...we will have to suck it up. Gah!

  2. I also am upset over what's going on with the USPS. I know this is not correct etiquette, but I am not pleased with the President in this regard-actually in just about every issue he has handled, but that's beside the point. The Pony Express was way more expensive than what we pay now, and the riders had huge danger in their jobs!

    1. I'm with you, Debra. The Postal Service is a venerable institution that has benefited almost every American in some way and to seek its destruction is hard for me to understand, even more so if it hinders people from voting.

    1. We're good now. Thankfully. Houses are no longer built to take advantage of fresh air and ventilation and ours was an oven for two days. Ready for fall, oh, about November. :)

  4. Thank you for visiting my blog, Jen. I'm glad you enjoyed my journal pages.

I really enjoyed this post. I can't imagine the US without the USPS. I love that letter to Annie and I hope it's a postcard or envelope so that some postal workers get to see the support they have from us citizens and taxpayers!

    1. I enjoyed the visit to your blog and seeing your journal pages! I like to illustrate my letters, and you had so many clever ways of illustrating your pages! Finding ways to make my postcards, envelopes, and letters funny and cheerful is such fun. Thanks for stopping by. :)

  5. No AC during this time of the year is just not acceptable! Glad you guys were able to get that fixed. This whole issue with the mail is so frustrating. The mail is absolutely essential. Love the perforated post link you shared and have them on my list to do some shopping on Etsy.

    1. It was miserable--imagine being cooler outside because at least the air moves. I'm still appreciating the fact that the AC is working again.

The USPS is essential for so many things, and I hope enough people are speaking up about how much they want and need a fully functioning Postal Service. The Perforated Post has such fun faux postage and I want more. :)

    1. Yes, especially now, the expectation of mail (whether personal mail or packages) is a comforting thing. :) Online orders are safer and more convenient.

    1. I wish I had a poster of that sewing sign! The AC is fixed, and I'm so happy! Don't know how the postal service will turn out. For some reason, there is an attempt to destroy it instead of fund it properly. Unbelievable, but so many things have been difficult to believe in 2020.

  8. Oh what a delightful blog. I'm glad I found your blog. And you write about books too. Blog heaven!
How interesting to learn about the US postal service and the pension money. I love the faux stamps.
I also like the sewing image. (Is it a postcard?)
Oh dear! No AC. That must be awful. We don't have airco but our climate is very dry and the heat is not so oppresive then.
I'm sorry I'm late in commenting. My laptop has decided it does no longer wants to use Chrome or Internet Explorer and I have not been able to comment. I have an iPhone but I've tried commenting before and most comments don't arrive. So I am looking for someone to do me a blog on Wordpress (the free version). If you know of anyone who could do that for me and is reasonably priced, please let me know. I have tried myself but I have not succeeded.
    Happy belated T-Day,
    Hugs,
    Lisca

    1. The sewing sign was a meme, but it would make a great postcard or poster to hang! I can't help with the Wordpress problem. I tried to convert several years ago and found the process tedious and came back to blogger. Now, with blogger making this transition (I'm still on the Legacy version), I may need help with a transition to another platform myself. :( Thanks for visiting!
