Brave Bird and Some Halloween Stuff

Last week, both cats were sitting on the bench when this bird (woodland thrush?  brown thrasher?) landed in front of them--I mean almost touching their noses.  Too stunned to move the cats stared until I jumped up and scared him away.  He flew to the fence and stayed there while I came within a foot and took his picture; he stayed for several minutes before flying away.  Never looked at all nervous about me (or the cats).

A few minutes after the bird flew, Edgrr decided to check it out.

Last week's outgoing mail:

Fred is one of my favorite monster eccentrics.

A couple of years ago, a friend gave me some dried gourds.
I had so much fun using them!

I've made a couple of Halloween paper cones using Dollar Store skeletons,
that I used a banner for several years.
After being cut loose, they found new homes in the cones.

 Creepy little critters.

I've about spent my creative energy, but I don't want that to happen.

What do you do to encourage the creative buzz, when you feel depleted of ideas?

  1. You might jumpstart your creativity with that lucky picture of the backyard bird. Have a few printed and see what you can do with them. May I go so far as to suggest something fun and silly? After all, it was pretty silly to amuse the cats and then you. I assume he's a fledgling and needed a break from the hard work of flying. He's a lucky guy that you were nearby to save his tail-feathers!
Love, love, love the mantlescape! And you say your creative mojo is spent.

    1. He was a big bird, but a pretty audacious one! Maybe I should keep him in mind for future inspiration. :) He is certainly the oddest bird encounter the cats have ever had!

  2. I'm sure another Creepy Critter is just lurking in your hindbrain waiting for the space to come out!

    1. Scary thought! But who knows what lurks in that lizard brain? :)

  3. This post is just full of creative fun. I love the gourd art! Sometimes associating with other creative people, on-line or in person, can jump start my creative energies.

    1. I agree that associating with creative people is a jump-starter and it would be hard to do without blog friends and Pinterest where both ideas and techniques are shared! Maybe my problem is too many ideas and the inability to focus. :p

  4. I can't imagine that your creative energy won't just replenish it's self. Some people are like that. Thanks for the ideas of how to use those skellies. I stick them everywhere along with my crows. I tried to dry gourds a few years ago. I don't think I had very good luck with that. The neighbors have cats that I frequently catch site of waiting in the bushes to pounce a bird. But then the dogs see the cat and the race is on!!

    1. I need another source for gourds. :) There are some wonderful skellie ideas on Pinterest, and they are such fun. I'm wondering if the bird is the one I heard a couple of weeks ago when sitting outside. It was like a lecture--the bird went on and on, never stopping, varying syntax and volume for about 7 minutes. I timed him after I realized it wasn't our usual mockingbird!

  5. Yes, it is a Brown Thrasher. And yep-that was him you heard. A few years ago I had about the same experience with one. He landed on my ground water rocks-natural water catchers for animals that I have in my garden. He just stayed on the edge of the water-I got a foot from him and he never moved. So I got my camera and took lots of pics. I have no idea what's going on with them- but must be they have dizzy spells!I didn't touch him of course, but I sure wanted to!
When I have an artist's block I always sort out something in my studio. Or take a nice walk.

    1. Thanks, Debra! I thought he must have been the source of the strange, conversational song I heard! It was so intriguing. The studio does need another clean and straighten, and yep, that often results in another project before the cleaning is finished!

  6. It took me a moment to get the cartoon... I think the bird is saying, “Hurry up and take the picture, Lady, I ain’t got all day!” Oh goody, more fun stuff from the mind of jenclair!

    1. He was in no hurry! Even after I walked away, he kept eyeing the situation with curiosity!

    1. Thanks, Iliana, I'm cutting skeletons from the banner and strips of cloth that I will be re-using in other ways. :)
