New Year in Motion

My New Year's Day began with the newest member of our family, Bryce Eleanor. Her parents, despite having been out until the wee hours of the morning, came to fetch her shortly after 11:00 A.M. I thought she would be able to stay until the afternoon, given the circumstances, but Amelia and Chris showed up with a peppermint mocha from Starbucks as an exchange for the baby. I really wanted to keep both...
The picture, of course, is from the night before. Bryce is covering her mommy's sparkly black top with the beaded scarf. They looked decidedly less chipper the next morning.

Unfortunately, the afternoon resulted in Laddie being transported to the hospital with a stroke. It was on the right side of the brain, and he has lost the use of his left arm and leg, but since the stroke was on the right side, his speech was not affected. At present, he is doing as well as can be expected. He knows us and is able to swallow and to eat with help.

Today has been better than yesterday, and we hope tomorrow will be better. I'm reading and commenting on blogs when I have a chance...it provides distraction and stress release. :)

  5. Sounds like you are coping well. I feel sad for you regarding Laddie's stroke, and joyful regarding the lovely baby and the family...what a striking photo. I believe that God gives us the grace to get through these times, one day at a time. I hope that he improves and your life stresses decrease. Hugs...

  10. I too am struck by the contrasts of your New Year's Day. The joy of a sweet precious new life to be a part of, and the sorrow of Laddie's fading. I'll be thinking of you.

  11. Deborah -- Thanks, for the good thoughts. I think we are in for a long recovery, but he does know us which is a good thing considering the circumstances.

Kay -- He is still hanging in there, and he doesn't seem frightened by the change in circumstances, which is what I'd worried about.

Angie -- Thanks, Angie, and I really appreciate the quilted hugs, the very best kind.

Debra -- I don't why, but it is often the case, and I'm grateful for it. Having the new grandchild helps keep things hopeful. Thanks for checking in.

Connie -- I am coping, thanks. I've been working on my coping skills for the last few months, and they have stood me in good stead. Hugs received and much appreciated.

  12. Karoda -- His vision prevents him from physically recognizing us, but that he still knows us just by our voices is encouraging. Of course, I'm not saying that much of what he says is coherent, the aphasia took care of that long ago, but he says our names, knows our voices. Thanks, K, I appreciate your concern.

ACey -- A mixed bag, eh? :) Yes, the blogosphere provides a place to verbalize and come to terms while receiving remarkable support. Thanks, ACey-

Marie -- And there is a time for everything under heaven... Thanks, Marie.

Debby - Hey you, haven't heard anything out of you lately. Are you making baskets and planning on your return to N.Y.? Thanks, Debby, we are all taking care of each other, a very good thing.

Jane Ann -- The day began and ended in completely different worlds, but life is full of those contrasts, isn't it? I do appreciate your thoughts and will be checking in on you as time allows.
