Dwindling Summer

I finally finished this "motto pillow" inspired by Laura Kemshall.  It kept my hands experimenting and busy while watching my shows.  I made a smaller version earlier for a friend and enjoyed it so much I wanted to play with the idea again.  This one is for another friend.  The sentiment is for her, but it works for me as well.

I loved embroidering on the felt, but couldn't write on it for the quote, so I had to add regular fabric for that portion.   The only thing left to do is add a ring to hang it on the back.

Does anyone have a good way to mark on felt?  I'd like to do one of these for Halloween and put the quote directly on the felt.  While all the rest is impromptu and unscripted, I need a guide for embroidering a quote.  I usually use pencil or fabric markers--which don't work directly on felt.  No luck with a chalk marker either.

In the meantime, I'm playing with some of the left over scraps of felt.

I have mail art to share, letters to answer, envelopes and postcards to make, book reviews to write for my other blog...but mustering the energy or enthusiasm has been pretty haphazard lately.  It is as if I have an attention deficit for anything that requires actual thought.  My response is a typical displacement activity-- needle and thread and a few beads.  Because it is soothing to watch mindless episodes of dramas and keep my hands active.   Lowers anxiety when the weather starts messing with my aura.  :)

  1. Love this motto pillow!!! And if that question gets answered, let me know. I don't see how you sew while watching dramas. Don't you have to look at what you're sewing?

    1. Thanks, Teresa! :) I stitch and watch Korean dramas with subtitles! Good thing I read pretty fast, because my eyes are flicking up and down. I also keep to simple stitches that I've done thousands of times, and I don't worry about being careful or neat!

  3. A really soft pencil might work on the felt. Or one of those quilter's fibre tips? OR maybe try a Pigma pen. You won't get a smooth line with any of them, I think, but you might get enough of a guide to work with.

Alternatively, write your motto on a piece of tissue paper, pin that to the felt, stitch through it and then tear the paper away.

    1. The fiber tips get caught in the wool, but a really soft pencil might work. The tissue paper is probably the best idea for several reasons! Thanks for the suggestion, Rachel. That way I could center the quote better as well. :)

    1. Thanks, Annie! When I saw Laura Kemshall's pillows, I finally found something that appealed to me without any need for perfection. She indicates there is no need to be cautious and that more is better for a project like this. :)
