I found this wonderful quote about piecing over at happythings ( she reviewed the book The Quilters: Women and Domestic Art.)
"You can't always change things. Sometimes you don't have no control over the way things go. Hail ruins the crops, or fire burns you out. And then you're just given so much to work with in a life and you have to do the best you can with what you got. That's what piecing is. The materials is passed on to you or is all you can afford to buy... that's just what's given to you. Your fate. But the way you put them together is your business. You can put them in any order you like. Piecing is orderly. First you cut the pieces, then you arrange your pieces just like you want them."
Saw this at Happythings too, and just love it!
ReplyDeleteWonderful quotation, JenClair, but even better, a great new blog to follow! (Just what I need, thank you very much.)
ReplyDeleteA timely post...it made me feel better about how crowded my life is right now and what I can and cannot do about it. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteForgetmenot - The review made me put the book on my lengthy wishlist!
ReplyDeleteJane Ann - :) You are very welcome!
Deborah - True, isn't it? Sometimes we just "don't have no control over the way things go" but the way we deal with the situations is up to us. It resonates with me, too, right now.
here i am stitchin' those pieces, best i can.
ReplyDeletetks for the reminder to make the best of what i have.
Reminds me of my Grandma's quilting. She did fantastic tied crazy quilts from whatever leftover fabrics turned up in her basket. I wish I still had one!
ReplyDeleteTruly "green" quilts!
merci for the wise quote, happythings site, & another book to seek out. and gerrie the notion or new moniker of 'green quilts'!
ReplyDeleteJude - I can't think of anyone who is doing a better job of it!
ReplyDeleteGerrie - We are pretty spoiled aren't we? In comparison to the limitations of our grandmothers, our quilts are luxuries in the making.
kimy - I liked Gerrie's comment about "green quilts," too.
that's lovely. and true. thank you.
