Want to Raise Rational Kids: Try Teaching Your Toddler Verbs.

The connections between music and math have long been recognized, but "A new study published in the Journal of Educational Psychology reports high school students who play musical instruments score significantly higher in science, math, and English exams than their non-musical peers."  (Source: Discover Magazine)

    1. I've always been fascinated with the connection between music and math, but didn't know that playing an instrument also had an influence on student scores on English as well. :)

  2. I agree with Rachel that music has lots of benefits. My brothers and I played in the high school band, and as it turned out we all loved math. ??? Of course, I love the pictures from your lovely garden! My internet has almost crawled to a stop and refuses to show me the photos of your mail. :~(

    1. And neurologist Oliver Sacks studied the effects of music on the brain--especially memory--and the benefits of music for those with Parkinson's and dementia. When my father was in an assisted living home for Alzheimer's, one of the "guests" (he thought he was in a hotel) would play the piano everyday. She could barely hold a conversation, but played beautifully from memory the songs most of the other "guests" loved.

  3. Your garden is always gorgeous at this time of year. My potted plants are doing well, but I've let everything else go. The crepe myrtles and large shrubs are enough to satisfy me if it means not going out in the heat.
Are you hunkered down for Barry? I suppose it's in your area now. My sister in Haughton said it's been raining but not too bad. We are getting plenty enough for everyone. Surely those clouds will eventually run out of water. I'm not complaining though because we've had power the entire time. Since our little town has fewer than 300 residents, we're not high on the priority list, which makes sense.
Loving your snail mail as usual. The little mice collage is just too much! Those little guys know how to party!
Thanks for the visit! Stay safe and dry, Mary

    1. I'm so grateful that Barry hasn't been as bad as predicted! I worried (excessively) about our daughter and grands in Baton Rouge and my best friend in N.O. as well as other friends in the boot. I had reassuring texts coming for three days. :) I'm glad you are safe and dry and was happy to see your quilting endeavors continued despite the weather threats, Mary! We have had a little rain up here in the north of the state, but nothing to worry about.

      Stay dry and keep quilting!

    2. We got enough rain for everyone in the boot! 15 inches in total. I wondered if we'd ever dry out, but tonight I fought the mosquitoes to water the potted plants. Go figure!
Glad that your family and friends are safe and dry. We are pretty resilient, aren't we?

    3. Jeez, Louise. You must have taken the brunt of it! We expected a decent rain, but got less than that. We are all going to have to be more resilient with the weather so unpredictable. We've had a couple of almost fall days with temps less than 90 degrees, while France has suffered from 107 degrees! Now that's weird!

  4. Music is so good for kids in lots and lots of ways. My son was in band from 5th to 12th grade and that's where he made his greatest friends.

    1. A shared interest in music is a good bond--especially when playing in a band! Musical ability is an asset that I don't have; although my family as a whole does, I must rely on appreciation. :)
