a mystery about an ex-monk who joined the LAPD and has recently resigned to become a private investigator-- by Gay Hendricks and Tinker Lindsay. Both were great reads. I've just posted a review of As the Crow Flies on my book blog and The Rule of Ten is scheduled for next week.
-------
Our friend Teresa has been busy for the last few weeks preparing for the Highland Blooms Garden Tour which was held this past weekend. The Highland area in Shreveport is an older neighborhood with many Craftsman-style homes, and complete with an old-fashioned/quirky/creative atmosphere. Teresa and Ricky have been active for several years with the Highland Restoration Association for several years, and Teresa is the current president of the association that seeks to restore and revitalize the area.

Since I was unable to attend the Garden Tour, I've enjoyed seeing the pictures Teresa posted on her blog, Views from My Highland Cottage. Stop by and visit!

Monday Musings

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Not that all of those useless "things" would qualify as art, perhaps, but that there is an artistic temperament required to steadily turn out things that no one needs.

In the physical sense, of course, we don't need art, but after the physical needs of food, shelter, safety, etc. are met, individuals begin to climb Maslow's pyramid. At the top of the pyramid is not only creativity (morality, etc.), but a genuine appreciation and need for beautiful, creative, inspiring things.

One of my favorite poems comes to mind, Peter Meinke's Advice to My Son. Meinke explains the need for balance in life in such visual ways. We need roses and tomatoes; we need bread and wine.

I've also been learning that counted cross stitch is too hard on my eyes, at least when using white on white. Maybe I should have gone with a larger size of waste canvas; maybe I should get magnifying glasses. Tuesday night, I stitched and pulled out. Stitched and pulled out. My eyes wouldn't focus on those tiny cross stitches well enough to find where to put my needle, but it was easy enough to see the problems when the stitches were done. Counting those tiny squares is difficult visually and frustrating emotionally.

May try again today, but no matter how much I love the way it looks, I may not be able to do much of the counted cross stitch.

Oh, and Universe, I could use some help with the computer.

In the Mail

<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif; the hardy, drought-tolerant yarrow will do a nice job of filling in without requiring any care.

I had some serious hand-scrubbing to do last night before playing with fabric.

P.S. Do you have some favorite garden blogs?

Finished the seams on the first piece, but may go back and add another layer for some of them.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; he is usually more spare and sophisticated. Our house reflects that lack of unity as we try to accommodate each other.

Now, that he has said that the flags make him feel peaceful, they mean even more, and my day begins on a high note.

Errands are in the forecast for today, but the pull of the studio is keeping me from getting started. Hush by Donna Jo Napoli, which I'd hoped to count for the Once Upon a Time challenge. Napoli writes for young adults, and her Zel (a retelling of Rapunzel) is excellent.

As it turned out, I'm not sure that Hush qualifies for the Once Upon a Time challenge, and while it is by no means as good as Zel, it caught my interest immediately because on the first page it mentions Brigid's cloak, dyed with Saw an interesting photography lesson? Click! An outfit you'd love to put together? Yup! Organizing idea for around the house? Go for it! A workout Regiment? Kick butt! Really this challenge is endless--you just need to tell us what you pinned and what you did. Make sure to note the original pin wherever you complete your wrapup (or if you do progress reports) to give the originator credit.
---------
What I SHOULD do is pin recipes and try them, but that might prove too much of a challenge for me, as cooking doesn't interest me much. On the other hand, it might gain me some Brownie points with my dear husband (who accomplished several "honey do" chores this weekend).

Or maybe...I should try some of the organizing ideas; however, every time I try to organize, I lose things.

Anyway, I think it is an interesting challenge for all of us who spend inordinate amounts of time looking and drooling to actually use the information/inspiration.

I haven't joined, but I am thinking about it. Maybe I could manage the Timid Pinner category. Surely, I could manage 1-3 Pinspirations.

The formal challenge ends on May 31 (I just discovered it), but a personal challenge could extend it throughout the year.
------
Whenever my brothers and I reminisce about our childhoods, our memories of events are often askew. We remember things differently in both large and small ways. It's funny and kind of entertaining to see the wildly different versions of the same events.

When I found the following quote at the smallest forest, I couldn't help but smile.

<h2 style="background-color: white; some days, I try to visit a few blogs on each list and to leave a comment when something charms me, but often not even that gets done. If I weren't so darned nosy, being unable to visit all of the blogs I love each day wouldn't be a problem, but I AM nosy and hate to feel like I'm missing something.

I've also found that between this blog and my book blog, only one takes precedence. Sometimes one, sometimes the other--but they never get equal time. Usually, this blog gets the most time because writing the review of the books I read always seems more of a chore.
-------
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; to be done (laundry, vacuuming, groceries, etc.) and what I want to do (try a new embroidery technique, start a new prayer flag, experiment with....). Guess which items get marked off.

Yesterday, I knocked off one item that has shown up over and over for about two weeks: Put suitcases on top closet shelf. For two weeks this task seemed like too much trouble (to get the stepladder and take the very few minutes required to get this done??). But I finally did it, and my self-congratulations knew no bounds.

This small success has encouraged me to do some of the other items that I've avoided. The bill and junk mail drawer is now clean and ready for a fresh accumulation, the laundry has been put away, the check deposited, cat toys retrieved from under the sofa and stashed in little hide-aways for them to search out, holes drilled in the new planter....

I've accomplished several of the past couple of weeks' procrastinated chores, and now, instead of continuing, it is time to rest on my laurels!
-------
I do not like the new blogger template. Not at all. Running through my mind is the old nursery rhyme: "I do not like thee, Dr. Fell/ The reason why, I cannot tell,/ But this I know, and know full well, I do not like thee, Dr. Fell."
---------

Weather and Some More Resist Experiments

"It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change." --Darwin.

<span style="font-family: 'lucida grande', tahoma, verdana, arial, sans-serif; hell, even my eyelashes and eyebrows itch. My eyelids are swollen and pink. I've sneezed so often and so violently that I'm surprised the top of my head remains intact.

As wonderful as this unexpected second-chance at spring has been, working in the garden has been a challenge. Actually, my suffering begins before I even go outside. Wahhh!

Complaints aside, the days have been so beautiful, and I have more basil, parsley, and dill to plant. I bought some potting soil yesterday for a big pot, and as soon as my antihistamine has a chance to kick in, I'm going to get busy.

Last week, I worked on some more flour resist prints. Here are the first versions.

I've been practicing stitching on gauze-like fabrics (I'll be taking Karen Ruane's class in May and this is one of techniques I really like, so I decided to practice a little in advance.

Stitched a grid onto the fabric, cut a square out of the muslin, and attached the grid. Then some feather stitching on top. You can see right through the sheer gauze. Does it look like a window to you? It does to me, so I decided to use "open"as the word for this flag. Open a window, let in some fresh air.

I've stitched on three of these pieces so far and will be doing more--maybe today. The other two are more lacy, and at least one, would be great for costuming a doll.

However, the creative steam may be running out. Not the steam for experimenting, but the ideas of what to do with the randomly stitched and fabric-resist cloth. What to do with them? They are currently joining all of the other pieces that I loved making, but find myself at a loss when considering the next step... of using them in some way.

The door to my storage cabinet is covered with stitched and eco dyed cloth of various sizes. Some have been there for about 6 months. They still please my eye, but are waiting for inspiration.

Rain yesterday, lots of it. After checking the fountain this morning, it became evident that a lot more bailing will need to be done (Murphy's Law), but since it is fresh rain water, I should be able to use it for eco dyeing. Except...I'm feeling really lazy and unmotivated today and may retreat to my reading chair with a book. :)

The Waiting Game

Yesterday, I showed you the fabric with the flour resist that I did using Jane LaFazio's tutorial. I painted over the flour resist and took pictures while the paint was drying.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Thread uses laying tools and has instructions for how to use one. She even has a video tutorial. Gotta' try it!

I've done a bundle and a wrap around an old foil-covered coffee can for the eco prints. My fingers are crossed that I'll get a good set of prints of the cabbage, yarrow, and birch leaves on the silk. The problem is the waiting. I'm so impatient, and this could take a month of waiting...if I can restrain myself. I've taken some pictures and will show you tomorrow.

What else is going on? I'm in the middle of trying the flour resist on fabric. Jane LaFazio text-align: center;">

So now there is a little bit of silk soaking in a mordant bath of alum and cream of tartar.

Something I just realized after getting out the silk -- on all of the prayer flags that I said I used habotai silk...I meant raw silk. I do know the difference, but for some reason, "habotai" is what I typed on every prayer flag where I used silk. And ALL of them use raw silk.

The texture, rough and nubby, of the raw silk appeals to me, and while I do love the sheer silkiness of habotai silk, it must be the word itself that I love. I'm not going back through all of those posts to change it, but habotai silk is in the mordant bath, and all of the prayer flags use raw silk. Duh.

------------

My friend Thomas has gotten me hooked on a Korean television series, A Tree with Deep Roots, and now I'm having to do much slower stitching because I'm having to read the subtitles, and I'm so entranced with the series that, in spite of my determination not to, I keep returning! Beautifully filmed and with engaging characters, the story line is loosely based on the Korean king who created the alphabet for the Korean language (instead of Chinese). It was so much simpler that a person could learn to read and write within a day.

"King Sejong presided over the introduction of the 28-letter Korean alphabet, with the explicit goal being that Koreans from all classes would read and write. He also attempted to establish a cultural identity for his people through its unique script. While creating the alphabet, King Sejong encountered opposition of courtiers. First published in 1446, anyone could learn Hangul in a matter of days. Persons previously unfamiliar with Hangul can typically pronounce Korean script accurately after only a few hours study."

<span style="background-color: white; I made a bunch of post cards from some of the discharged fabric, too.

When we impose on another by taking up their time or attention (when not freely offered), it becomes a form of theft. I read somewhere about a yoga teacher saying that being tardy or late falls into this category of theft of time. Of course, there are times when being late is unavoidable, but if it is through laziness or carelessness or done deliberately, then it violates the precept of asteya.

You know what I mean. Have you ever told someone to be present at a time earlier than you told everyone else--in hopes that the entire group wouldn't have to wait?

Asteya also means we should refrain from taking another's ideas, thoughts, words, or techniques and claiming them as our own original ideas, etc. Taking credit when it belongs to someone else is a form of theft. When these things are freely offered, we can take advantage of that generosity, but not claim it as our own original ideas.

Asteya is honesty, in any and all aspects, tangible or intangible.

There is so much generosity on the web, so much sharing. Most of the people who share ideas and techniques aren't saying they "invented" it out of thin air, so to speak, but more that they have "embellished," "developed," "expanded," --have taken a technique further in some way and shared it freely. We are all grateful for this generosity, and ideas and techniques spread outward, rippling through various communities.

Building on a foundation is wonderful, as long as we don't claim to have built the foundation.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;
