Stitching and Snail Mail

Although I've stitched short phrases, after reading about Rosalind Wyatt (in this post), I wanted to try again and maybe stitch something longer.  Stitching on the studio shirt wasn't very successful, so I decided to try on muslin, and...

I'm still practicing stitching words,
experimenting with different threads and sizes of text.
Small and cursive is harder,
but if doing an entire poem,  instead of just a few lines,
small and cursive might be what is called for.
More practice needed--
it doesn't have to be perfect, but I want it legible.

Using muslin might be OK if I used batting underneath, but a tighter weave would be better as well.  Since I actually enjoy the practice, and at this point have no idea about a real project, I will keep experimenting with the cursive.  I can always add my practice pieces as patches to the studio shirts or ...well, I don't know yet, they may end up with a lot of other things that "seemed like a good idea at the time."  :)

I love the ad, but would not care for the products!

Tonight, I think I will take a walk through the neighborhood to see the lights that have been going up for several days.  Things are so different at night with Christmas lights and decorations on display; the neighborhood loses its mundane, everyday appearance and becomes magical.

Are you ready for the count-down?  Have all the gifts bought?  Wrapped?  Are you finished or just getting started?

  1. Oh, Jenny! LOVE your word stitching! Beautiful sentiments and humorous ones both. Love that. Legible would be a must after all the work it takes to write with thread by hand. The pieces will add character however you decide to use them. Love your mail too. Aren’t the lights of Christmas just the best! I love seeing them. I wish it were warm enough here for me to walk around to enjoy them. But driving to enjoy is a nice second choice...if someone else drives so that I can just oooh and aaah and not miss a thing.

    1. I'm still working on making the cursive legible, but think I'm getting there. We are still pretty warm here most of the time. Didn't even need a sweater when I walked last night and there is something so pleasant about combining a little exercise with the visual experience of the lights. Hopefully, we will get some cold weather eventually, but right now it feels like spring. Disconcerting!

  2. I'm still spluttering that "It isn't even December yet! Harumph!". But I do like your embroidered texts..

    1. I've been hoping for inspiration to get in the Christmas spirit; the lights helped a little. In our quiet neighborhood, the lights aren't overly showy, but are cheerful.

For some reason starting the commercial aspect of Christmas so early makes me more, rather than less, stressed. More time to worry about what to get for whom--and to be just as uncertain. I envy the decisive nature of those who have everything done early, but I never do. I'm getting the decorations out tomorrow, though. December 1 is my younger daughter's birthday and it always seemed like a good time to decorate. :)

  3. I love stitched words. I want to stitch inspirational sayings and quotes on blocks and make a quilt with them. It would certainly make a great slow stitching project.

    1. I've thought about that, too. Several years ago, I saw a quilt done that way with lines from poems. I wonder if I can find that pic. For me, it will never happen, but I love the concept!
