Finished and In Progress

I finished two of the Catrinas I've been working one.  First, the one I took to Amelia when I went to the office yesterday.

Then the one for Erin, which now I must figure out a way to package so I can mail it to her.  I'm hoping I have a box  to use; surely with all of the boxes I save, one will work.

Love using the tiny skull beads I bought in New Orleans at The Bead Shop.

Two down, one to go.  But the third head, the one with hair, doesn't appeal to me as much, so for the time-being, she is on hold.  I made the body (which I like), but this time won't use an armature--when I get back to her, she will either sit or stand.  And I also have the old-fashioned witch doll on hold.

So...yesterday, I started working on a sock doll.  Haven't made one in several years, but I saw a pair of children's socks with a pumpkin in the dollar section of Target and decided it was time to make another one.  The body and limbs are sock, but the head is painted muslin.  When the paint was dry (gessoed, sanded, painted with watery black, then with orange) I liked the effect and now I have other ideas--and I haven't even finished this one.

Also, a couple of years ago, a friend gave me some small gourds.  I used one, but went into one of my dry spells, and they sat (washed and scoured) waiting.  Vintage Halloween black cats are one of my favorites and after the gourd was painted black, I checked several images of vintage cats, sketched out a few variations for eyes and have a cat in progress.

I have these fits two or three times a year and will spend about 8 hours a day playing with cloth and clay.  It's messy.  Partly because I move from one thing to another, starting something new before finishing something else.

    1. The gourds are proving to be a lot of fun-- and a lot faster than the other Eccentrics I've been playing with. :)

  4. I know you call them Catrinas, but they remind me of "Day of the Dead" characters I've seen in pictures and movies. I really like the flowers on the heads. They take away from the seriousness of the doll--I guess I really like fun. I made a sock monkey for Dusti several months ago (maybe longer, I lose track) and everyone wanted one at the time. I promised myself not to make anything small unless I'm willing to listen to the clamoring for more, because I surely will lose interest before making enough for everyone. That's the problem with lots of grands...they don't realize that one is really seven! And make just one for me becomes but you made one for ____.

    1. La Calavera Catrina is a sort of icon for the Day of the Dead celebration. The first one I made I was calling the Day of the Dead doll, but then a little research into the history led me to the background of the Catrinas, which is very interesting.

:) I've never made a sock monkey, but I made several sock monsters a few years ago. It is fun to use gloves and make odd appendages! Ha! I only have 3 grands, but I know what you mean!

  5. These Catrinas make me just....happy!! My daughter brought a boy sugar skull bust last night. His eyes light up and the color continually changes. I couldn't choose a favorite between your dolls. LOVE THEM !!

    1. :) That makes *me* happy, Carol! I'm really paying attention to sugar skulls now. They are usually more cheerful than sinister, although I've seen some creepy ones.

  6. These are WONDERFUL!! I can't wait to see your sock dolls -- might have to run over to Target to see what I can find. Love shopping in the children's section *smile*. Also can't wait to see your Halloween cat (s).

    1. Thanks, Penny! I'm pleased with these 2 Catrinas and will finish the other later. The gourds are keeping me interested--at first, I was not pleased with the cat, but after adding the ears, I like him. Almost finished with the sock doll; like the gourds she was a pretty fast piece. Sewing in the hair has been the slowest part. :)

  7. I love your burst of creating! I also tend to move around, sometimes juggling 5 or 6 projects at the same time. but somehow, they all get done, and I don't get bored with any of it. It works for me!

    1. Moving from one project to another does keep things from getting boring, even if creates multiple messes at the same time! I wish I had a steady stream of ideas, but what always happens is a fallow spell followed by too many ideas at once. :)
