For the Last Week

I've been  working on some new heads.
Have no idea where they may go.
Serious or Silly.

Folding book pages.
A Christmas tree?
A skirt?

Playing around with shapes.
Interesting photo effect.
Folding pages is time consuming,
but satisfying somehow.
I love mindless activity.
Keeping the hands busy.
Idle hands are the Devil's Workshop.

I've also been experimenting with some new ideas.
If it is possible to make a time consuming task
consume even more time,
you can bet I'll find a way.

Ah, embroidery will do it.

It seems as if I either have no ideas
or too many ideas.
Working with clay, embroidery, and books
means total chaos.
The smart thing to do
would be to stop
and clean and straighten.
We'll see how that goes.

  1. Chaos, perhaps, but I so love what you're coming up with! I'm intrigued with the folded pages -- I have absolutely no place to store those things, though, so likely I won't venture in that direction with my own book work. A Facebook friend makes dolls as well, many of hers are absolutely creepy; your latest are anything but that. Keep creating, mixing up all that media! xo

  4. Connie - I really don't have a place for them either, but experimenting has been so interesting. It's funny how energy can go off in tangents, isn't it? Your book making, quilting, dyeing--each taking precedence at different times.

Francoise - Oh, just what I need! Encouragement to do what I want!

Liniecat - Thanks! And that is a silk worm cocoon on her head (painted with a wash of black fabric paint). So bookworm seems very appropriate!

  5. I'm loving those embroidered pages and can't wait to see where that will go. And if I may, I'll add my own cries of "leave the cleaning"-- your chaos is working! I don't know any artist whose work space is clean. Most of us work best with a little "inspiration" cluttered around us.

  6. I really admire your ability to create faces and heads. You are so great with making different expressions and head shapes. Wow. And I love the embroidery on those pages. I never would have thought of that!

  8. Mary - embroidering on the paper is a bit tricky as the paper tears easily, but I'm getting the hang of it.

I always work in clutter, but not always with different mediums at the same time. :\ The clay doesn't play well with others because it needs water to keep it moist and a place to roll and shape it.

Stephie - Thanks! I'm trying some new tips on clay from Linda Hollerich and other clay artists.
The inspiration for embroidering the book pages--I wanted to try out my new threads!

Teresa - I'm trying to think of new head pieces/hair/hats, etc. for the heads. Sometimes I leave them bald until the end, but sometimes the head piece or hair helps determine the personality. Sometimes the heads never go any further, never move beyond this stage because I just get tired of them before getting the inspiration to develop them further.

  11. Nancy - :) The gang is getting to be a rowdy bunch!

Sherri - I think I've just exhausted the latest cycle of creating. I may be in for a fallow period now. Letting the ideas percolate until something offers an inspiration.
