Back to the Blog World...

I love this wild rose with the potato vine (not "sweet potato" vine) winding it through it. It will bloom through next fall.

It makes me smile when I look at it because it just seems so exhuberant!

Took Laddie to see Aunt Mary on Sunday; she had a fall recently, too. She is 88, but sharp as a tack even if very frail. I mailed her a copy of Anne of Green Gables yesterday and have ordered her a copy of All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot. If you've never read James Herriot's books, I can't recommend them highly enough. They are so funny and charming. The BBC had a series years ago based on the books which was also excellent.

I bought Quilt Toppings: Fun and Fancy Embellishment Techniques with my 40% off JoAnn's coupon and hope to glean some good information from it. Couldn't resist these buttons either...especially the square ones!

Monday, we had the sad news that my Aunt Janice died. It is sad, but it really was a release from a long and debilitating illness. My cousin will do the service tomorrow; he's a Methodist minister and grew up down the street from Aunt Janice, so it is most appropriate.

I've managed to finally get a little more work done on this baby quilt. All my projects have become accustomed to long periods of idleness, but they never complain. It felt good to make some progress.

  1. Jen, I read all of James Herriot's books and was a DEVOTED fan of the show, watching it over and over and taping all the episodes. I was lucky enough to visit England during the height of the show's popularity and went to Yorkshire on a sort of pilgrimage! They are so wonderful and charming...just what is needed in this often gloomy world.

I love how you said the quilts don't mind the idle time. Very cute. Both the comment & the quilt.

  6. missed you in the blogosphere. sorry to hear about your aunt janice - what a comfort to have family officiate. james herriot's books (both the adult ones and the illustrated kid ones) were a large part of our lives when my daughter was a child - I attribute her love for animals directly to them. ah, yes the baby quilt is fun! namaste, kim

And thanks for the reminder about the Herriot books. I've never read them, and I'm such an Anglophile that I will dip into that series next. I always appreciate your book tips.

  11. Deb H - My copies of All Creatures Great and Small arrived from Amazon yesterday. One for me and one to put in the mail to Aunt Mary!

Connie - Thanks, Connie! The quilt is a little bright, isn't it? I love the square buttons.

Deb - It was really fun at first, but later one, I got tired of the MESS of SCRAPS everywhere, including the floor. :)

kimy - Thanks. Not only did one cousin perform the service, but Aunt Mary (88) played the piano, and Uncle Buddy (84) and another cousin sang. It was a family affair. I even cackled out loud when Mike described Aunt Janice arriving late to church, clothes askew, in all of her wild colors. She was a true character and a good woman.

jude - Thanks! It is a bright and busy little quilt. I really need to go ahead and finish it :)

ACey - Love those square buttons!

Jane Ann - Oh, do read them. They are some of my favorite books of all time, and they make you feel GOOD!

Barbara - What a nice thing to say!
