Potpourri

I've read a little, slept a little, watched some television, taken various medications, and am feeling better. Now it is about time to go back to bed. :)

I love optical illusions and this one is excellent! Here are some more.

Another area of great interest to me is symbolism, and I have several books on the subject. Colors have different symbolic meanings in different cultures. Here is a link to Color Psychology.

Some interesting details from the above site:

The most romantic color, pink, is more tranquilizing. Sports teams sometimes paint the locker rooms used by opposing teams bright pink so their opponents will lose energy. (This article didn't mention it, but years ago I saw a television program about holding rooms in police stations being a certain shade of pink.)

People are more productive in blue rooms. Studies show weightlifters are able to handle heavier weights in blue gyms.

Yellow enhances concentration, hence its use for legal pads. It also speeds metabolism.

  1. I love seeing what you have for us on this blog because we have so many common interests. I have a florentine linen tablecloth I'm considering custom-dyeing a smooth melon orange, given the color's positive impact on the appetite. But I also soothing moss green would be lovely, so can't decide.

  2. Just now checking blogs, I came across a post on another one with this link to colors too. http://women.indiatimes.com/articleshow/1520063.cms
Considering color makes me think of all the times that I swap out one tiny scrap of fabric or chose between 3 almost-identical threads to get the perfect color I need. It may only be one shade darker, but it can make all the difference in the world to me.

  3. ACey - It does make you think, doesn't it? Next time we paint (and this has been discussed frequently as a project lately), I'm going to pay more attention to the influence of color.

Delta - Isn't that strange? Now you've connected me to another link about India. I've read several Indian novels and am a big Bollywood fan, and now a new link to things Indian!

Your attention to detail and insistance on the right shade is why your work is so special. It isn't that anyone is going to notice the thread if it is the right shade, but they will if it is the wrong shade.

  6. As I get older I'm finding that deep reds and bold colors are "moving" into my home. Hope your headaches have subsided - I know how debilitating they can be, I've had more that my share of migraines over the years. Take care.

  8. Rian - Cool ones! I went through all of the pages. Some were the same, but many were new. Thanks!

Debbi - I'm glad someone shares some of my interests!

Kim - I've found more "color confidence" as I've aged. That's us -- OLDER AND BOLDER!

Annie - Awww, Annie, I started lovin' orange when I turned 50!

  11. Funny, I just remember that pale green is calming, which is why they kept most "green rooms" green after the depression LOL

  14. You might enjoy my master's thesis - The use of color in clothing and personality traits - I think I was way ahead of my time.

I have always been interested in color and psychology.

  15. Jude - I hate that question. I have the favorite color of the moment or for something specific, but not a favorite in general or all of the time. On the other hand, sometimes colors that I didn't care for (like orange) have become glorious to me, and I'll be drawn to them regardless of what else is available.

Gerrie - I always knew you were before your time! I'll bet you uncovered some revealing information.
