Sunday Miscellany: Harvest Moon, Memory, Quilting

Has anyone else been watching the Harvest Moon? So beautiful, so huge! It was still there this morning well after dawn, like a memory.

And speaking of memory, when Erin and the kids came and I straightened up, I put my "memory pad" (where my childhood memories were being recorded) somewhere and now can't find it. What does that say? I'm going to go cut some rosemary from the garden and keep it close. "There's rosemary, that's for remembrance, pray you, love, remember."
One of the WIP projects that I've been putting off for a couple of months is now in progress again. Had no idea how to quilt it, but went ahead several weeks ago and made the sandwich for machine stitching. Then yesterday, decided to hand quilt it -- partly because I couldn't decide what to do and had already pinned it together and couldn't go back and mark it without taking out all of the pins and partly so I'd have hand work for watching television or movies at night. (I joined Netflix and need something to do while watching).

Here is my improvised quilting frame. I took what used to be a laundry hamper with mesh bags added the "snap caps" from a QSnap tiny hand frame, and whaddaya know?
Then I tried a tip about threading several needles onto the spool, to be cut as needed.

Now, I'm set for a while!

  1. How ingenious! you are ready to stitch. I love the idea of a memory pad. I was so flooded with memories this week, I should have had one.

  2. Gerrie, it works pretty well! My stitching sucks, but the frame is OK :)

I know you were full of memories this week...maybe you should write some of them down.

  3. Yes, the moon has been fabulous--couldn't help thinking of Fran and "Moonstruck" (not necessarily any connection there that I know of!). I tried to get a picture of it before sunset, but my neighbors' houses block it that early in the evening.

I am laughing out loud at your forgetting where your memory book is! Getting old just ain't for sissies.

  4. We have had clear weather the past few days (and nights) so I have been seeing a lot of this beautiful harvest moon. Saturday it was so bright there was not much sleeping that night. I opened the shutters to have a look and it was being reflected on the ocean in a beautiful way.

  5. Rian, I know what you mean about sleeping. A full moon will occasionally keep me from sleeping, but for the last two nights, I've had very little unbroken sleep. The moon exerts so much influence on us, I think I'm going to research (google) full moons and sleep.

I wish I could have seen the harvest moon reflected in the ocean!!

  6. I have tried several times to get a photo of the moon reflecting on the ocean but my littl point 'n shoot camera isn't up to the task.

  7. I like your quilting frame. Ingenious! The artist with the silk threads does really great work. I can understand about artists not wanting others to copy their work, but I think for the most part, it would give them better and free advertising.

  8. Shelina, I can understand as well. It seemed the less skill involved, the more reluctant they were to have their work "published" because it can be so easily copied. Several of the artists whose things were cute or funny (but not terribly difficult)were the ones to decline. Jean Yao, on the other hand, just seemed not to know what a blog was...I could take the photograph, no problem. But when I mentioned "blog" and "online" - she seemed confused. I wish I could show her work because it is marvelous, but if she is reluctant for any reason, I will respect that.

Trying to manage Laddie, my purse, and the camera was difficult so I stopped asking about photographs.
