in progress

I've been working on this quilt when I have time. This is the front. There are also shots of the back and some details. I've done just a tiny bit of handquilting, but decided to take an in-progress picture.

I already had the front done when the library called to tell me the Gwen Marston book was in, but as soon as I began reading it, I decided to play with the scrappy, ad libbing idea and put together the block used in the center of the back. I've read through several sections and gone back to the photographs several times. It is a fun and "liberated" approach.

Yesterday was a long day...didn't get home until after 7:30 because Marty, Laddie, and I went to Minden to visit Aunt Mary after work. She is in the hospital there with pneumonia.

  1. Interesting photos (I don't know a lot about sewing) The top image appears to me to be a school of fish caught in the jet streams

  2. :) Those are safety pins for basting before quilting! But I think fish caught in the jet stream is more interesting! Since you are a "no reply" commenter, I'm answering here.

  3. The Gwen Marston book is VERY inspiring -- one of my favourites.

  4. I love your work ... I'm one of those quilt admirers who lacks the skill and the patience for it.

And smiled over the Cinderella quote ... it's superb.

  5. Margaret, good to here from you. You've gone from one blog to three, and I love them all.

Wandering Woman, glad you like the quote. Sums things up nicely, doesn't it?

  6. It does ... I may steal it and link back to you, unless forbidden :)

  7. Wandering Woman-- You are more than welcome to the quote. I get so many quotes and book titles and ideas and information from other blogs...

I found the book in a little book, but there was no attribution. I may try to Google it to find the author.

  8. I really love this piece. Have "visited" it twice and had to comment on my enjoyment.

  9. Love the aqua colour against those squares - an inspired combination of colours :o) the flower centres are also awesome on your previous posts, so often in a garden we just see the overall impression but never stop to study things really closely

  10. Jen, as usual your photos are lovely. Do you quilt in a hoop? I just cannot do that. I pin and baste like crazy and just quilt in my lap. I haven't done a really large quilt for that very reason. It's alos one reason I do small pieces. Your work is just beautiful.

  11. ACey, Anne, and Rrramone: Thanks for the nice comments!

Deborah: I posted a question about hand quilting and frames in an earlier post. The response wasn't exactly what I expected-- MANY people don't use frames. Some hand baste (which I'll do next time) and some pin baste. With no real experience in hand quilting (except a couple of TINY pieces), I eagerly excepted this advice and skipped the frame.
