16th century and 20th century poems

Two posts in one day. When I read Vicci's poem, a favorite of mine by e. e. cummings, I had to search out this one by Sir Philip Sidney. Are they a pair or not?

My True-Love Hath My Heart

My true-love hath my heart, and I have his,
By just exchange one for the other given.
I hold his dear, and mine he cannot miss:
There never was a bargain better driven.
His heart in me keeps me and him in one;
My heart in him his thoughts and senses guides:
He loves my heart, for once it was his own;
I cherish his because in me it bides.
His heart his wound received from my sight;
My heart was wounded with his wounded heart;
For as from me on him his hurt did light,
So still, methought, in me his hurt did smart:
Both equal hurt, in this change sought our bliss,
My true love hath my heart and I have his.

Sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586)

And if you haven't read DebR's sonnet, you had better get over there and read her praise of Johnny Depp! :)

I have taken Mac for his checkup, been to Home Depot, Walmart, the cleaners, and completed several errands. AND I've edged and mowed the back yard, cut down two trees, and transplanted a rose bush. Now I'm catching up on some of the blogs I've been missing, before getting back to work.

  1. Oh my gosh Jen....they are alike! I love both of them! We must have been thinking alike this morning! AND...did you say "Get Back to work"?????? Girl! sounds to me like YOU are working! Amazing how these "gettin older" bodies can accomplish so much!

  2. What a beautiful poem! I've never been much of a poetry lover...I think I was just too young to understand it all when I was in high school and college. But I'm learning to appreciate it more, now. And after reading Vicci's, I just had to come over here and read yours!

  3. I've loved that e.e.cummings poem for a very long time but hadn't seen this one. I copied Sidney's to put in the book with Cummings'. Thanks! Now to check out Johnny Depp (another favorite!). In my humble opinion few of today's movie actors compare to the old timers, who are quickly disappearing, but Depp is as good as any.
