Embossing

Deb Geyer asked about the embossing technique.

The open container is embossing powder; you can see the powder in front of the bottle. The two with black tops are pearl ex powders. Below is a picture of some embossed pieces that were left over. Ran an ink pad over the wrinkles, then sprinkled embossing powder, shook off the excess and used a heat gun. Click on the picture and you will see the wrinkles with embossing on top a little better.

I love watching embossing powder transform under a heat gun.

The texture of the wrinkled tissue paper just doesn't show in the pictures, but maybe from the embossed scraps, you can get an idea of how the texture is throughout.

I'm still working on the second piece, and it still appeals to me, until it is finished, I never know if it will succeed. Have completed the applique and the machine quilting, and I'm doing a little hand quilting now.

  1. if i'm understanding correctly, the embossing was not against fabric? my results with trying to emboss on fabric where not appealing at all...yours is just on the tissue paper, right?

  2. Ooops! I must be an excellent target. Shot myself in the foot and now, must admit I did use a gun after all! Where's my camo? Someone protect me from myself...and Mary!

Right, Karoda, the embossing is on the tissue. I have never had much success on fabric either; embossing seems to be absorbed by the fabric and doesn't have the melty, glossy effect.

  3. Do you then sew the tissue on the fabric; glue it in place or what? And do you remove the tissue that does not have embossing on it?

  4. Deb, I put wunder under on the felt, wadded up the tissue, then straightened it out some, and ironed it onto the felt. The entire background of this piece is tissue.

I experimented with a different color tissue on the scraps, tried the embossing powder on them, liked the way they turned out,and then sewed those pieces onto the background. I didn't emboss the background piece, but did rub some metallic paints over it.

  6. HI, Ginger. Sewing through the embossed sections wasn't a problem. Maybe because the embossing wasn't a solid design, just random highlights on the wrinkles.
